How Long Term SEO Efforts Produce Real Intrinsic Value for a Company

The value of organic search engine placement rankings (SERPs) for a particluar search phrase for a particular company can be measured in terms of replacement value. Below are examples of three high profile searches in Google and how to value their impact.

This is an ongoing effort that we are currently under contract for and this particular client was not ranking in the top 500 positions for any of these search terms when we first started. If we are ultimately able to produce top 5 rankings for these searches we will have produced tremendous intrinsic value for this company. The marketing value we discuss for each search term below is based on what it would cost to achieve the same visibility and traffic using only pay-per-click advertising. That also assumes no bidding increases over the next 12 months which is not very likely since we have been seeing year over year increases of 20% or more for pay-per-click bidding on specific search terms.

Three Examples and the Estimated Replacement Value Assigned to Them

Currently our client ranks #45 for "water conservation products" out of a total of 5,750,000 results.

A top 5 ranking for just this one keyword is estimated to bring about a $781.00 a month intrinsic marketing value to a website or about $10,000 per year in free advertising. (This of course doesn't count any of the potential sales that could be generated)

Currently our client ranks #69 for "water saving shower heads" out of a total of 319,000 results.

A top 5 ranking for just this one keyword is estimated to bring about a $1616.00 a month intrinsic marketing value to a website or about $19,400 per year in free advertising. (This of course doesn't count any of the potential sales that could be generated)

Currently our client ranks #130 for "low flow shower heads" out of a total of 257,000 results.

A top 5 ranking for just this one keyword is estimated to bring about a $4576.00 a month intrinsic marketing value to a website or about $54,900 per year in free advertising. (This of course doesn't count any of the potential sales that could be generated)

Recent Results from New Client LSS Data Systems Continues to Validate SlickRockWeb's SEO Strategies

Over the 30 day period of July 1 2008 - July 31 2008, at the start of SlickRockWeb's SEO implementation, only 7 different non-branded search terms were used to lead searchers to the LSS Data Systems website and non-branded search generated a measly 0.21% of the total traffic to the LSS Data website.

As of the past 30 days (April 25th - May 25th) 280 different non-branded search term combinations were used and non-branded search generated 9.5% of the total traffic to the LSS Data website. Increased visibility on the web comes with increased risk

New Studies Show That Website Outages Can Be Very Costly For Small Businesses

New studies done on medium to small sized businesses show that on average, these companies websites are down an average of 77 minutes to one day per month. Many companies rely on the Internet as their primary sales and marketing funnel. Web site downtime can lead to lost revenue, lost customers and damaged public image. Many visitors who experience the downtime may question if the company has gone out of business or may just go to any of the dozens of competitor that can be found with a simple Google search.

A recent Andersen Consulting Services survey reveals that more than 25 percent of online shopping experiences fail during holiday seasons due to site outages.

Another survey by the NDP Group reveals that up to 23 percent of online shoppers still experience temporary website outages, late shipments, and customer service issues.

These studies attributed the majority of the service outages to the following causes; about 20 percent of service interruption can be caused by technology failures and environmental factors, 40 percent can be caused by application crashes like bugs or incorrect updates, and another 40 percent is from human error and poor 3rd party IT support. The five major reasons for IT failure are; software application failure and poor web development, operating system failure, hardware server failure, network failure, and misconfiguration.

According to Forrester Research, online retail sales are expected to to grow 12 percent, to $44 billion, this year.

An average monthly outage of 77 minutes would cost businesses in aggregate $77,351,598.00 annually.

An average monthly outage of 1 day would cost businesses in aggregate $1,446,575,342.00 annually.

Does Size (Rank) Really Matter?

A recent analysis of client projects and how the "organic" search engine rank for a specific search term relates to the traffic that search term ultimately generates revealed just how important a 1st page ranking in the search engines is. In general our findings revealed that even increasing rank within the first page of the search engines created a non-linear increase in traffic generated to the client's website. In some cases the increases approached that of an exponential increase. These large increases in traffic were even more revealing when the rank of the search term moved up from page 2 to page 1 of the search results. In many cases the client saw a 2-3 fold increase in traffic for that search term just from moving the rank from greater than 11 (page 2) to less than 10 (page 1).
