Get Emails as Texts with SMS

With SMS (Short Message Services) the lines between emails and texts are becoming even more blurred.  This is great news for anyone without a smartphone or in an area without 3G or WiFi who needs to be able to receive email messages on the go or be able to receive and respond to email alerts quickly.

If you have a cell phone and a service provider that provides texting services, then you have everything you need to start getting emails as texts.  Your new address will start with your phone number without any punctuation.  For example, 123-456-7890 would need to be 1234567890.  Following that would be the usual "@" symbol - and then the SMS ending (or 'Gateway') which varies carrier to carrier.  Verizon customers end with "vtext.com" for example.  In this case, the full address would look like this:

1234567890@vtext.com

For a full list of carrier gateways check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_SMS_gateways.

Contacts can either send emails directly to this address, or you could set up email forwarding to this new address whenever you're going to be away from a computer.  Regardless, now there's no reason everyone can't have access to emails on the go without having to pay for a media plan and a smart phone.  Of course, SMS has a limit of 160 characters (hence the word 'Short' in it's name), so you won't be able to read all the novel-like emails from your great aunt Betty, but that's more of a pro than a con anyway.

To Keyword Stuff your Domain Name or To Not Keyword Stuff: Matt Cutts Tells All

Matt Cutts of Google Discusses Domain Name Authority and Whether Keyword Stuffing in your Domain name is a good idea.
This idea of purchasing domain names that have important keywords stuffed in the domain name has recently come up and we thought it was worth discussing. Check out what Matt Cutts of Google fame says in the following video. Here he compares brand domain names vs keyword domain names and which is more important and pertinent. Matt Cutts gives us an insight to having your brand name in the domain rather than just stuffing keywords in the domain strictly for the SEO Benefit. He also highlights here that Google may well ‘dial-down’ soon and give a lesser weight in the ranking algorithm to domains containing keywords. If your new SEO firm is advising you that this method might be your magic bullet you might want to think twice about hiring them ...

SlickRockWeb Client Savingtape Featured in Southwest Journal

Filed under: Client News — Eric @ 7:18 pm

Minnesota soldiers soon to be deployed crave a digital memory of home

The Minneapolis Southwest Journal just published an article featuring the Smiles for Soldiers program offered by our client Saving Tape - a Minneapolis based media conversion company.  Their Smiles for Soldiers program presents an affordable way for family and friends to send home movies and other forms of media to deployed soldiers on a simple, easy to use DVD.

The sticking point for most families looking to send home movies to their loved ones is that all the different media they want to include seems impossible to combine.  Still images from cameras.  Movies from a flip cam.  Movies on a neighbors camcorder.  Old footage stuck on VHS.

Being a media conversion company, Saving Tape is able to convert everything from beta tapes to 35mm film into a cohesive formatted DVD.  And, with the Smiles for Soldiers program, families of American service members can convert their movies at a discounted price.

While, from an SEO standpoint we're happy when any of our clients receive news coverage, this Southwest Journal article is particularly exciting because it highlights what we think is a truly valuable program.  All of our soldiers deserve a chance to stay up to date on the lives and happenings of their families back in the states.  Saving Tape is helping to make that chance a reality.

Watch Out, the Lines Between SEO and SEM are Blurring

I had a client recently ask me to review a company call Netbiz which guaranteed certain rankings in Google for a $150 - $175 per month. First off, any company that "guarantees" certain rankings is generally enough to trigger all the red warning signals that I need. There are no guarantees in life and there are even less guarantees in the world of SEO and the ever changing search engine algorithms. Nevertheless I thought it would be useful to delve into the details and ultimately try to present what I found.

NetBiz is basically a SEM company and not an SEO company. Unfortunately for most consumers these two very different types of services have been blurred into one. SEM is basically pay-per-click advertising and getting listings in online websites like yellow pages, Dexknows, ect.. SEO is much more complicated and requires an indepth understanding of web programming, search engine algorithms and what is required to get a good natural ranking. It appears that Netbiz does pay-per-click advertising through Google and presents it as SEO. Unfortunately I found a number of complaints like the one below where basically what they said over the phone was not actually what the customer got.

A review of NetBiz.com and their claim to being an SEO company by one of their customers:

I saw a post from a company called NetBiz.com that guarantees placement on the first page for certain search terms. I got a call from them probably about a year ago and gave me a major search term for my area. However, after I had paid the fees to get everything going, I did not appear under that search term. Instead it was under another search term that I believed would never get any business. Called and said they were sorry that I misunderstood the term that I would be listed with. However the gentleman said I will definitely get lots of action under the search term they gave me. I watched my statistics over a few months and never got one hit. Personally I  would be very careful of this and other SEO companies.

Jeff Launiere

When one looked up the BBB ratings for Netbiz their claims became even more suspect.

BBB Rating for Netbiz Inc

Based on BBB files, Netbiz Inc has a BBB Rating of C- on a scale from A+ to F.
Reasons for this rating include:

* 37 complaints filed against Netbiz Inc.

Bottomline is one always has to ask careful questions and make sure you understand what the prospective SEO company or consultant is promising. Having a first page ranking for an obscure term that will never generate any traffic is an obvious waste of money and completely disingenuous on the part of the SEO company. Our grandparents didn't tell the age old adage, "if it sounds to good to be true .... " for nothing.
